Department of Computer Science senior lecturer Dr. Ulrich Speidel and his students investigate the causes and possible remedies for underperforming satellite links. They have identified that the behaviour of multiple TCP senders over the shared long latency satellite bottleneck causes both link underutilisation and packet loss, and slows down large downloads (such as software, pictures or large e-mail attachments) in particular. Network coding is a possible solution to this problem and Dr. Speidel and his group have built a state-of-the-art satellite network simulator to investigate how best to code TCP traffic to Pacific Islands. Their work is supported by PICISOC, ISIF Asia and Internet NZ.
